2003 Year in Review Posted On: 2003/11/02
Well, this year was meant to be a development year. Campaigning two cars was not going to be easy or cheap. I'm forever indebted to my former team mate, now in Alberta with his wife and first child, for his tremendous help with the RX-7.

With the exception of the WOSCA winter events, I pretty much started the year with the RX-7, running the long trip to WOSCA and other events on the R-compound tires. The RX-7 always takes a few races to remember how to go fast, primarily because of the passive 4-wheel steering. And, add the finicky setup hassles of running tires that are too wide for the rims, the tires took a beating at one particular WOSCA event, ending the RX-7's street legal days.

Somehow, despite considerable rusting, I still can't part with the RX-7. It has taken all season just to get the Talon up to comparable speed. More than likely I'll run the RX-7 again next year, since after lowering it and getting tonnes of negative camber, the only real event I managed to test the setup at was the WOSCA Regional event...and we all know how tough that course was!

I confess that I ran the Talon primarily to impress a certain girl, but the Talon too had its quirks. While the RX-7 was a huge chore on some tracks due to its manual steering, I spent the whole season experimenting with the Talon's power steering control system, to keep it from suddenly locking up under certain conditions. I also remember very vividly that awful June day I installed the new sway bars on the Talon--I must recommend the addition of some new swear words to the English language.

All in all it was a good year, but I think I may not run quite so many races next year. I am convinced that all I need for the Talon to take overall FTD is some R-compound tires. I also suspect that the RX-7 can be a contender, if I could actually obtain a decent set of brake pads for it.

So it looks like yet again I'll be running two cars. Oh well, maybe I'll have some time now to finally send in my experience record for my P.Eng. and get a big promotion and raise...
